Southworth Fine Paper is FSC Certified
Agawam, Massachusetts (September 21, 2009). – Southworth Company, producer of Southworth® brand premium paper products, is pleased to announce that they have received FSC certification for Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody and Controlled Wood standards.
Forest Stewardship Council, or FSC, is an independent, non-profit organization that has established a certification system to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Chain of Custody certification provides the assurance that Southworth is maintaining a control system that tracks the material it sources from the forest to the end consumer, through all stages of transportation, manufacturing, and final distribution.
The Southworth application process consisted of audits, site tours and interviews at both, the Turners Falls mill location as well as the company’s headquarters and converting facility in Agawam. The FSC label will begin appearing on Southworth brand packaging beginning in Q1 2010 to include the company’s 25% Cotton Fiber Business Papers and 25% Cotton Recycled Papers. The label certifies that the wood fiber used to make this paper comes from sustainable FSC-certified forests.
“Southworth has always been conscientious over where we source the materials for our products.” stated David Southworth, President of Southworth Company. “Now, with the addition of our FSC certification we have shown the company’s further commitment to the environment.”
About the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is widely regarded as one of the most important initiatives of the last decade to promote responsible forest management worldwide. The FSC label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. It provides standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry. FSC is the only forest certification system supported by such major environmental organizations as World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation and Greenpeace.
