Reflections on a Paperless Society

Reflections on a Paperless Society

We’ve all heard about the coming of a paperless society, especially since electronic devices play such a big part in our daily lives. A national scientific telephone survey was conducted by Poll Position this year.

Weight Just a Minute! The Deal with Paper

Weight Just A Minute! What’s the deal with this paper?

I don’t know about everyone else, but more than once I’ve confused myself trying to determine the differences in paper weights. The paper weight on one package says it is 60 lb paper, but yet it feels much lighter than another package of paper that states it is also 60 lb weight. What’s the deal? Unfortunately, the Constitution does not guarantee that all paper is created equal – so let’s try to figure this out.

A Letter is Better

Southworth Supports “A Letter is Better!” Campaign

When I think of Valentine’s Day, one of the first things that come to mind for me is the cards – the racks upon racks of greeting cards that start pouring into the aisles of retail stores immediately following New Year’s. The same racks that, fast forward 5 weeks later, are barren and wiped out like the milk freezer at a grocery store on the day a snowstorm is forecasted. Why all the cards… why the need? We live in a digital world. We communicate digitally every day don’t we? Can’t we just email or, better yet, text our loved ones on Valentine’s Day to tell them how important they are to us? Well I guess we can, but does it really mean the same? Isn’t it the effort that makes it meaningful, the idea that someone took time and put thought into it that really makes it special to us?

Letter Writing: Your Connection to the Future

Letter Writing: Your connection to the future

I don’t know about you, but I have a fascination with letters written by the famous and the infamous. There’s something intensely intimate about a handwritten letter, even beyond its content. The authors put pen to paper and share their deepest thoughts and emotions of the moment. When we get to view them, sometimes years after they have departed this world, we get a glimpse of their culture, history, and the vulnerability that even celebrities feel.

One example that stood out over the past year was in part due to the incredible amount of money it brought at auction.

Get Social. Your Opinion Counts.

Let’s get social

We recently dipped our toes into the social waters of Facebook, started a Southworth Blog, and launched Product Reviews on our new website. I know it’s not polite to boast, but please humor me on this one because the feedback has been enlightening.

It turns out that given the opportunity, people love to voice their opinion. Happily, most have been positive. So read on to “listen in” on what people are saying.

Penny Wise and Pound Foolish

Penny Wise and Pound Foolish

an excerpt from the Southworth archives

What would you think of a man who bought a beautiful brand-new Cadillac with air conditioning, white wall tires and all the built-in luxury extras which the Company manufactures, but neglected to take out one penny’s worth of insurance for liability, property damage, fire or theft?

Facebook Founder uses Snail Mail?

Facebook Founder uses Snail Mail?

I know it’s hard to believe but it’s true. Yes, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, has his own personal stationery. This is not remarkable news for the leaders of most corporations. But the notorious Mr. Zuckerberg happens to reign over a high-tech empire that is famous for gluing people to their computers and smart phones where they conduct most of their interpersonal communications via Wall posts. The Facebook Corporate Headquarters is not what one would consider to be a mecca for traditional cotton letterhead and matching #10 envelopes.

Create Your Own Bible

Create Your Own Bible

It was with great interest that I recently read a press release announcing the Smithsonian’s restoration of the Jefferson Bible. Now, I am not what you would call a history buff, and can’t even say I’ve spent much time reading scripture. In fact, I didn’t even know that there was a Jefferson version of the bible.

A Word From Dave Southworth

It is with great pride and humility that I accept the challenge to write the company’s first blog post.

Being a fifth generation Southworth to serve as president of a traditional New England paper mill, I am in awe of the pioneering spirit of my ancestors who founded the company and kept it going and growing through the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, and the Great Depression.
